Title: Caroline and Kowhaiwhai
Medium: Acrylic Paint on Canvas
Year: 2001
Statement: The idea for "Caroline and Kowhaiwhai" came on a rainy July day on Martha's Vineyard. Caroline, rather bored and grumpy, was watching videos on TV. I wanted to paint. So, I did a quick study that became, with Allison's help, the painting below. I included the kowhaiwhai in the scene because I wanted to have Caroline's artistry in the work. Title: Le Faux Sauvage (Self Portrait II)
Medium: Acrylic Paint on Canvas
Year: 2002
Statement: The green underpainting set the tone for this work. I strove for a "wild" realism, and the vine underscores that feeling while serving as a decorative element.
Title: Long Beach 1916
Medium: Acrylic Paint on Canvas
Year: 2002
Statement: This painting is based on a small faded photograph I found in my Great-Aunt Ann's trunk. I always have loved this scene and thought it would be interesting to re-interpret it on canvas.
Title: The Green Dress
Medium: Acrylic Paint on Canvas
Year: 2002
Statement: My mother died in December of 2001. She was 74. My mother loved fashion and could recall ensembles bought 40 years before. This green dress, purchased for a wedding in 1969, always epitomized her style for me. My mother loved cigarettes, too, which is why she died slowly and painfully from emphysema.
