Self-Portrait
(Acrylic on Paper)
Artist's Statement: Painting is so much fun. It's a chance to express myself with imagery rather than the words by which I make a living. Mixing colors, layering glazes, brushing in textures allows me to do my own edit on reality. Painting people is a particular challenge that I relish tackling. The hours spent working on a canvas at Blue Circle are among the highlights of my week. I just wish the time didn't seem to go so fast.

Title: Betsy and the Green Rabbit
Medium: Acrylic Paint on Canvas
Year: 2002
Statement: I wasn't sure how to finish this painting until I found a green rabbit lawn sculpture. Rabbits are the family "symbol" -- I don't know why, but we have bunnies scattered through the house and garden.

Title: Mill Creek Bridge (Homage to Whistler)
Medium: Acrylic Paint on Canvas
Year: 2002
Statement: I have always loved Whistler's "nocturnes" -- the mysterious play of darkness speckled with light. I found this bridge off Route 154 in Haddam and thought it would lend itself well to a "nocturne-like" treatment.

Title: Approaching the American Falls at Niagara Falls
Medium: Acrylic Paint on Canvas
Year: 2002
Statement: Crammed in the bow of a tour boat, I was struck by the power of the falls and how the rush of water and air converged. I wanted to replicate the scene. This landscape of fact and fantasy comes from the lingering emotion of memory.
